Canadian authorities have taken steps to stay the deportation of Indian students who allegedly submitted fraudulent admission letters to educational institutes, following efforts by Indian authorities. External affairs minister S Jaishankar had said it would be “unfair” to punish the students. Reports suggest about 700 students are affected, but the actual number is thought to be lower. Most had gone to Canada between 2017 and 2019. Some have recently received stay orders on their deportation notices. Canadian parliamentarians from different parties have spoken in support of the students.
