The Supreme Court of India has stayed the conviction of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case. The decision allows Gandhi to regain his status as an MP and participate in parliamentary debates. The court held that the trial judge failed to explain why Gandhi deserved the maximum punishment and that his disqualification deprived proper representation to his constituency. The conviction was related to comments Gandhi made about the “Modi” surname.
