India’s real per capita health spending in 2019-20 was the highest since 2004-05, reaching ₹3,516 at constant 2011-12 prices, according to the National Health Accounts estimates published by the Union health ministry. The government’s contribution to health spending rose to 41.4% while households’ out-of-pocket spending was at a three-year high in the year preceding the pandemic. India’s total health bill reached ₹655,800 crore in 2019-20, a 9.96% YoY increase, the fastest since 2013-14.
