J Robert Oppenheimer, considered the father of the atomic bomb, played a pivotal role in the development of the devastating weapon during the Manhattan Project. The bomb works through the process of fission, or the splitting of atoms, which releases a massive amount of energy. Oppenheimer and his team faced numerous challenges in the development of the bomb, including finding the right element to be fissioned and purifying uranium. The first nuclear bomb was tested in 1945 and was later dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the war, Oppenheimer faced scrutiny and accusations, but his security clearance was reinstated in 2022.
