Army personnel stationed at Narangi military station in Guwahati, India have developed a unique relationship with wild elephants that frequently enter the area. The army has taken steps to ensure the safety of the elephants and their own personnel, including breaking down walls to allow the pachyderms to move around more easily and training soldiers to live in close proximity to them. The measures have resulted in a peaceful coexistence between the two groups, which is rare in a state known for conflicts between elephants and humans. Assam has around 5,700 wild elephants, with more than 70 people and 80 elephants killed annually due to human-elephant conflicts.
