India experienced the fourth coolest May since 1951, with four out of five months in 2023 being cooler than normal. Extreme summers have become more common since the 2000s, and intra-summer temperature variations have also become extreme, putting more strain on adjusting to the outside environment and affecting weather-sensitive production activities. A cooler summer this year could be a factor behind the delayed onset of monsoon, which could adversely affect agricultural output in the kharif season and result in subpar reservoir levels throughout the country.
