At least six people died in West Bengal during the three-tier panchayat elections, taking the toll to 48 since June 8. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that 19 people died in poll-related violence and announced compensation for the families of the deceased. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) won a majority in the elections, winning 42,005 of the state’s 73,887 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came second, winning a significant number of seats. A BJP team arrived in the state to visit violence-hit areas and submit a report to party president JP Nadda.
